European Commission to extend use of glyphosate

The license to use the chemical glyphosate as a herbicide in the EU will expire at the end of this year. The chemical was at the center of attention a month ago and yet despite the criticism, the European Commission wants to extend the license for another ten years.

Just a couple of weeks ago there was public outcry when an independent study revealed that the use of glyphosate can be dangerous for your health. Environmentalist groups claimed that studies about the chemical, which the EU uses to justify the license, are funded by Monsanto. This renders the conclusions of those studies unreliable. Members of the green party in the European parliament blame the extensive lobbying from Monsanto and want a ban on the chemical.
